It is located in the Chamarajanagar district of southern Karnataka in South India. This area is also under the consideration of the UNESCO Committee for its consideration as site for World Heritage.A sanctuary of 90 km2 (35 sq mi) was created at this site in the Bandipur Reserve Forest in 1931. The Bandipur Tiger Reserve was established under Project Tiger in 1973 by carving out 880 km2 (340 sq mi) from the Wildlife Park. This park has boasted a constant rise in Tiger population since then. The Nagarhole National Park which lay towards its northern edge and Wayanad Sanctuaries which lay towards its southern edge in the states of Kerala and Tamilnadu and this park itself now constitute the vast Nilgiri Biosphere, one of India¡¯s extensive tracts of protected forests. Towards its northwestern fringes, there is a gradual shift in the vegetation from open dry deciduous forests to tropical mixed deciduous forests. These diverse habitats support an enormous diversity of animal life. For the nature lover, the Bandipur National Park is a treasure house waiting to be explored. The place has thick vegetation in the form of trees of different kinds of trees, bushes, grass and thick undergrowth. Bandipur houses several exotic varieties of fauna. While on your safari here do keep a look out for tigers, elephants, sloth bear, four horned antelope, Sambar Chithal, Gaur and many more.
