Dibru-Saikhowa National Park
Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is a national wildlife park in Tinsukia, Assam, India. It was established in 1999 and the area covered is about 340 km². Nestled in between the Brahmaputra and the Dibru rivers, Dibru-Saikhowa exhibits the properties of both the Indian and Malayan sub-regions. Located near the Eastern Himalayan foothills, it is one of most vibrant wilderness on earth also known for its scenic pristine beauty. Some rare and endangered animals of this sanctuary are Hoolock gibbon, capped langur, slow loris, water buffalo, tiger, elephant, gangetic river dolphin etc. Dibru Saikhowa enjoys a tropical monsoon climate with a hot and wet summer and cool and more often than not dry winter. A unique habitat endemic to Dibru-Saikhowa only, a habitat which has undergone radical transformation after the great earthquake of 1950. The Brahmaputra is characterized by old growth semi-evergreen forests, deciduous forests, littoral and swamp forests and patches of wet evergreen forests. These horses are the successive off-springs of the tamed horses that had escaped from the Army camps during World War II. It was elevated to the National Park status in 1999 restricting its core area to 340 km² with a large buffer zone. The bird life consists of Spot billed pelican, White bellied heron, Pallah's fishing eagle, Pale capped pigeon, Swamp francolin etc. and migratory birds like Bar-headed goose, pelican, Black stork, Geyleg goose, Brahmini duck etc.
