Dodori National Reserve
Dodori National Reserve is a protected area located in Lamu East District of Coast Province in Kenya.It was gazetted in 1976 and there are covers area of 877 km². Dodori lies 280 km north of Mombasa. Dodori reserve is named after the river ending in the Indian Ocean at Dodori Creek, a breeding place for dugongs. Dodori hosts a vegetal diversity mainly consisting of coastal and riverine forests, mangroves, swampy grasslands and savannah. The bird life at Dodori has not yet been deeply researched. Dodori is also well stocked with topi, probably some of the largest concentrations to be found in Kenya. Dodori's sea wildlife could be watched from the nearby Kiwayu Safari Village, a rustic luxury secluded beach lodge located in Kiwayu island close to Lamu and Kiunga Marine Reserve. Dodori Reserve was established to protect an antelope called the Lamu topi, as this area is a major breeding ground. Away from the rivers and channels, impenetrable thornbush is scattered with gigantic baobabs.Staying on your own is strongly discouraged due to the unsafety situation in the region. Dodori is named after a river, which meets the Indian Ocean at Dodori Creek, reputedly a favorite haunt of the dugong.
How to reach Dodori National Reserve:
How to reach: By road to Dodori lies 280 km north of Mombasa. As mentioned above, access by land to any of the two reserves is not recommended for safety reasons. Anyway, none of the two reserves may be easily approached by car and the visit requires a 4WD vehicle.Then access to the dodori reserve.
