Dudhwa National Park
Bordered between Nepal in the North and the river Suheli in the South, Dudhwa National Park is an exotic wildlife destination for wildlife lovers all over the world. It lies in the Terai region of Uttar Pradesh, India. Its headquarters are in the Lakhimpur Kheri District .The area was established in 1958 as a wildlife sanctuary. Thanks to the efforts of 'Billy' Arjan Singh (was an Indian hunter turned conservationist and author) the area was notified as a national park in January 1977. In 1988, the park was declared as a tiger reserve, and forms the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve together with the Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary.The vegetation of the area is moist deciduous. The forest here are reminiscent of the forests of Bardia on the Nepal Side with huge Sal trees, tall termite mounds patches of riverine forests and large open grasslands.The high dense forests are interspersed with extensive stretches of grasslands and wetlands. The predominant tree species are sal, asna, shisham, jamun, gular, bahera and sehore.The major attractions of Dudhwa National Park are the Tigers and Swamp Deer. Also the bird life is prolific - being a marshland, it provides a natural habitat for the winter migratory birds, with over 350 species, including the Swamp Francolin, Great Slaty Woodpecker and Bengal Florican. It also includes among others, painted storks, black and white necked storks, Sarus Zranes, woodpeckers, barbets, kingfishers, minivans, bee-eaters, bulbuls and varied night birds of prey. An ideal paradise for birders to see the Lesser Bengal Florican and Swamp Partridge - both these species are on the red alert list.
