Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National Park is a 97 km² national park situated along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of Kerala in India. It was established in 1978 and the area covered is about 97 km². It is situated on the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the north where it extends as the Annamalai National Park. The Park holds the largest viable population of the endangered (IUCN) Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius). The slopes of the hills abound in many kinds of rare flora which include rare terrestrial and epiphytic orchids, and beautiful wild balsams. A protected area, the sanctuary is divided into three regions that means the core area, the buffer area and the tourism area. A former hunting preserve of the British planters, the Park today exemplifies wildlife at its best. This is the Eravikulam National Park, known for the Nilgiri Tahr, a goat in dire need of the dedicated protection given by the State Forest Department and the company which owns the tea estates in Munnar. The mating season of the tahrs is between June and August and the gestation period is nearly six months. The National Park is important as a catchment area for both east (tributaries of River Cauveri) and west (tributaries of Rivers Periyar and Chalakkudy) flowing rivers. It contains about 120 species of birds and has the largest surviving population of Nilgiri tahr.
