Gombe Stream National Park
Gombe Stream National Park is set in 16 KM north of Kigoma on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, in western Tanzania. It is established in 1968 and the Gombe is the smallest national park in Tanzania. Gombe Stream National Park is well known for the chimp research done by Jane Good all, with an area of only 52 KM2, Gombe Stream is Tanzania's smallest national park. As your boat glides through the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika towards the sandy beaches and rugged hills of Gombe Stream National Park. Here the Gombe Stream Tented Camp was opened in 2002, close to the park headquarters. The smallest of Tanzania’s National Parks, Gombe Stream is a thin strip of ancient forest straddling the steep slopes and river valleys that hem in the sandy northern shore of Lake Tanganyika, about 25 KM's from Kigoma town. Were made famous by the pioneering work of Jane Good all, who in 1960 founded a behavioural research program that now stands as the longest-running study of its kind in the world. The park measures about 32 KM2, but may be significantly larger in actual surface area (36-60 KM2 appears in literature). The Gombe Stream's main attraction is obviously the chimpanzee families that live protected in the park's boundaries.
How to reach Gombe Stream National Park:
Reach by Road: The Park can be visited at any time for tourist here. These Chimps are generally more sedentary and easier to find in the fruiting season "Nov to May”. The springboard for visits to Gombe, Kigoma lies on the lakeshore 24 KM south of the park headquarters at Kasekela. There is no road access to Gombe, but hotels in Kigoma can arrange motorboat charters – the transfer takes 30 minutes each way so a day trip is a possibility, but a couple of nights in the park greatly improve the odds of a good chimp sighting.
