Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park
Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is situated on the southern coast of Kenya near Shimoni and south of Wasini Island in Kwale District near the Tanzanian border. Kisite park covers are of 39 km² while Mpunguti reserve. The park has one of the most beatifull coral life that can only be seen when you visit the place. The entire Marine Park is in shallow water. It can be reached easily, by motor boat or traditional dhow from Shimoni. The Kisite coral reefs are estimated to be (3-4 kms) long running along the near and outer edges of the reefs from Mpunguti Island to the tiny coral island of Kisite itself. Kisite Island is an important nesting site for Crab plovers and roseate terns on their annual migration from Europe. Kisite Island, which lies 8 kilometres from the coastline - an important island as it is a breeding ground for the migratory Roseate and Sooty Terns. The ecosystem covers a marine area with four small islands surrounded by coral-reef. Kisite Marine Park and are frequently seen in the channel between the mainland and Shimoni. “Shimo” means hole or cave in Swahili and historically.
