Kiunga Marine National Reserve
Kiunga Marine National Reserve is set along the Indian Ocean coast of Lamu District, Coast Province, Kenya. Kiunga Park Gazetted in 1979 and covers area of 270 km2. The larger and more sheltered inner islands are covered with tangled thorny vegetation including grass, aloes and creepers. These park is covers an area with approximately 50 islands and coral reefs in the Lamu Archipelago. Composed of old, eroded coral, the islands lie around 2 km offshore and inshore of the fringing reef. They vary in size from a few hundred square metres to 100 hectares or more. The larger and more sheltered inner islands are covered with tangled thorny vegetation including grass, aloes and creepers. It is an important site for wind surfing, diving and snorkelling, water skiing and sunbathing. The outer islands provide nest sites for migratory seabirds. A pre-requisite for achievement of Kiunga's purpose is an enabling environment for marine reserves in Kenya. Major wildlife attractions include reptiles such as Sea turtles, Olive ridley, and Reef fish. Lobsters, Sea urchins, Sea star and also frequent sightings in the reserve. They are believed to be the origin of sailor's mermaid sightings as it was thought that they had breasts.
