Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes at a height of 1754 M above sea level. The park lies in Central Kenya, 140KM north-west of Nairobi, in Nakuru district of the Rift Valley Province. The Lake Nakuru National Park is situated approximately 164KM from Nairobi, a two hour’s drive from Nairobi city. This is one of the best places in Kenya to see leopards, and white rhinos are commonly seen at the lake’s southern end, but the park’s most famous attraction is the flamingos that ring the lake in thousands. It surrounds Lake Nakuru, set in the Central Rift Conservation Area in the Southern Rift Valley region of Kenya. The lake’s catchment is bounded by Menengai crater to the north, the Bahati hills to the north east, the lion hill ranges to the east, eburu crater to the south and the mau escarpment to the west. Lake Nakuru National Park was created in 1968 to protect the huge flocks of over of the lesser flamingo that breed and nest at the edge of Lake Nakuru, giving it the characteristic pink rim. A relatively small park at approximately 250 MK2 Nakuru should never be overlooked. Lake Nakuru National Park has been gazetted in 1963 to protect its shallow soda lake, a natural water catchment on the flank of large volcanic calderas in the heart of the Kenyan Rift Valley. Lake Nakuru is one of the Rift Valley soda lakes. It lies to the south of Nakuru, in central Kenya and is protected by a small Lake Nakuru National Park. The park was first gazetted as a bird sanctuary in 1960 and upgraded to National Park status in 1968. Therefore the park is one of the most visited both by Kenyans and foreigners, receiving huge numbers of visitors that peaked in 2007 with 346,800, according to the Ministry of Tourism. The Rift Valley gave rise to many lakes that have become a habitat for diverse wildlife, among them Lake Nakuru, which in turn became the centre piece of Lake Nakuru National Park.

Reach by Road: The park has a tarmac road connection with Nairobi. This is a distance of 156 KM North West of Nairobi on the main A104 road. The most commonly used route into the park is via the main gate, 4 KM from Nakuru Town Centre. It is also possible to enter the park from the main Nairobi Nakuru road at Lanet Gate.
