Mikumi National Park
The Mikumi National Park is a national park in Mikumi, near Morogoro in Tanzania. The park has established in 1964 and currently covers an area of 3230 KM².Mikumi National Park is the most accessible of the southern game sanctuaries. Mikumi National Park abuts the northern border of Africa's biggest game reserve - the Selous – and is transacted by the surfaced road between Dar es Salaam and Iringa. More than 400 bird species have been recorded, with such colourful common residents as the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-throated longclaw and bateleur eagle joined by a host of European migrants during the rainy season. The Animal Behaviour Research Unit (ABRU) was established in Mikumi National Park, Tanzania, in 1974. Mikumi is perhaps the most accessible and popular of Tanzania's national parks. Due to the completion of the paved road connecting the park gate with Dar as Salaam, Mikumi National Park is slated to become a hotspot for tourism in Tanzania. Mikumi shares the same boundary and ecosystem with the more remote Selous Game Reserve of the south.
How to reach Mikumi National Park:
Reach by Road: A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, a roughly four hour drive. Mikumi is accessible by road or by air from Dar es Salaam or Arusha. Also road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and Selous. Local buses run from Dar to park HQ where game drives can be arranged.
