Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary
Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary is a community-owned elephant park. This is conservation area for elephants and Encephalartos cycads in Kwale District of the Coast Province of Kenya. The sanctuary was formed in the early 1990. Mwaluganje is a dispersal area (corridor) for elephants from Shimba National Reserve to Mwaluganje forest The Golini Escarpment serves as the eastern boundary of the sanctuary. The sanctuary provides an alternative lifestyle for the domesticated working elephants closer to their natural living conditions in the forest. The location provides a safe area away from the villages to treat sick and injured elephants while providing a hands-on approach to education and welfare improvement. The Elephant Sanctuary, which measures 60,000 acres, was established in 1995 to create a corridor for movement of elephants between Mwaluganje Forest reserve to the north and the Shimba Hills National Reserve to the South. Other activities include working in the local school to improve facilities, maintain the tree nursery and run environmental education activities with the local school children, all with the ultimate aim of enabling wildlife and people to coexist peacefully. This all too-common conflict has now been resolved into a mutualistic relationship with both parties deriving benefit. The area is important at international, national and local level. The elephant keepers are provided with an alternative income and the rescued elephants are provided a sanctuary with veterinary care and no longer work long hours.
