Nagarhole National Park
Also known as the Rajiv Gandhi National Park and located close to Mysore, Karnataka, this is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, and is in process of being awarded the World Heritage by UNESCO. Originally the forest area was the private hunting sanctuary for the Mysore royals. In 1955 the two adjacent forest ranges ( Mysore and Nagarhole) combined to form the Nagarhole National Park. Later the park was named after the late prime minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. Still the old name – Nagarhole National Park- survives.Dry deciduous forest trees are leafless in the summer rather than in the winter. There are grassy swamps where the soil is clayey, perennially moist, and which support a luxuriant growth of green grass all year. The change in terrain throughout the park is refreshing and the river system provides a unique wildlife viewing experience. The park has an astonishing abundance of wildlife including large mammals such as tiger, leopard, wild elephant, dhole (Indian wild dog), and gaur (Indian bison). Elephants can be found in good numbers here whereas and tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and sloth bears are found in viable numbers. The large predators prey on a variety of ungulates, like gaur, sambar deer, chital (spotted deer), common muntjac, four-horned antelope, mouse deer and wild boar. Gray langurs, lion-tailed macaques and bonnet macaques represent the primates in the park. On the surrounding hills outside the park occur Nilgiri tahrs and Nilgiri langurs.
