Saiwa Swamp National Park
Saiwa Swamp National Park is located near Kitale, Rift Valley Province in Kenya.The park ecosystem comprises of forest and swamp vegetation. It is the smallest national park in Kenya, only 3 KM², and was created as habitat for the Sitatunga, a rare aquatic antelope.Created specifically for the protection of the sitatunga , a rare and vulnerable semi-aquatic antelope, Saiwa Swamp National Park is the smallest in the country and is rarely visited, despite its accessibility, which is a pity.Saiwa is the smallest park in Kenya, only 3 KM². It was established to protect the semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope and encloses the swamp fed by the Saiwa river together with its fringing belts of rain forest.The fluffy black and white colobus and the impressive crowned crane are both present, and you may see the Cape clawless and spot-throated otter. It was established to protect the semi-aquatic antelope, Sitatunga and encloses the swamp fed by the Saiwa river together with its fringing belts of rain forest.It was established in 1974 and is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service.The park ecosystem comprises of forest and swamp vegetation.This Park is unique in that it is only accessible by foot.It is also home of the endangered De Brazza Monkey and a variety of others, giant forest squirrel, Black and White Colobus monkey, bushbuck and grey duiker.The park is enclosed by subsistence farming settlements. The park can only be visited on foot and there are footpaths and duck boards that meander through the swamp and some rather dodgy observation towers.
