Samburu National Reserve
Samburu National Reserve is located on the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River in Kenya. It was established in 1985 and there are covers area of 165 km². Samburu National Reserve is one of the 56 protected areas in Kenya. Lying on the flood plains and bottom land of Waso Nyiro drainage system in the Great Rift Valley. Downstream, on the right bank and across the highway, lies the less well-known, 239km² Shaba National Reserve. It became a reality due to foresight of the County Council and generous assistance given by several individuals and foundations. The Ewaso Nyiro and its tributaries flow north through Laikipia from the Aberdare range and Mount Kenya in the central highlands, and the main river then elbows east through a series of ravines. The wildlife is plentiful here for the same reason – dozens of species of plains grazers and browsers gathering in the thick acacia and doum palm forest along the river banks to drink and seek shade. In practice, most visitors come to Samburu National Reserve itself, on the north bank of the river, where the majority of the region’s relatively few safari camps and lodges are located. They share a similar style with clean, whitewashed walls, polished red-stone floors and North African and Arab fittings.
