Singalila National Park
Singalila National Park is a reserved forest area located at the Singalila ridge in Darjeeling district. It was established in 1986 and total area covered about of 78.60 km². Singalila range starts shortly after Manebhanjan and stretches through Tonglu, Tumling, and Gairibas. The Singalila Park also has a priceless collection of different species of rare orchids that adorns the forests. Thick bamboo, oak and rhododendron forest between 2000 and 3600m cover the Singalila Ridge which runs roughly north to south. The park extends into the surrounding forest, which have been designated as Reserved Forest. This has created a unique eco-system populated by plants, birds and mammals which are hard to find anywhere else in India. They therefore play an important role in the success of the conservation measures that are being applied in the park. The checklist for the area contains 160 records and a recent survey in April. The park is known for its rich floral and faunal diversity, which includes many species of rhododendrons, birds and smaller mammals like the endangered clouded leopard and the red panda. The habitat varies from bamboos, oaks, to rhododendron. The best times to visit the park are from March to June, and September to December.
