Mahale Mountains National Park
The Mahale really is one of the most unique safari destinations in Tanzania, Africa. This Park lies 120 KM's south of Kigoma, on a peninsula that juts out into the lake. These are famous for containing some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa. The Mahale Mountains National Park was gazetted in 1985.It is covers an area of 1 613 KM² and is located about 128 KM south of Kigoma town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. The park, Tanzania’s most remote and one of its most alluring is first and foremost a chimpanzee sanctuary. The area to the south and east of Mahale from the Lubugwe to Karema and inland to Mahale was formerly known as Ubende or Ukabende.The lakeshore here is a beach of the finest powder-white sand, behind which rises a range of imposing mountains, clad in verdant tropical vegetation. Accessible only by boat or by air, Mahale Mountains National Park is known to be among the most isolated and beautiful parks on the African continent. The area is also known as Nkungwe, after the park's largest mountain, held sacred by the local Tongwe people, and at 2,460 metres, the highest of the six prominent points that make up the Mahale Range.
How to reach Mahale Mountains National Park:
Reach by Road: Mahale is not the easiest or cheapest place to get to. In rare cases, your tour operator will pick you up from the airport and make ongoing arrangements. Charter private or national park motorboat from Kigoma, 3 to 2 hours. You may also travel by private motorboat which usually takes 3 to 4 hours.
