Mount Elgon National Park
Mount Elgon National Park is a national park for 140 KM North East of Lake Victoria. The park surrounded an area of 1279 KM² and is bisected by the border of Kenya and Uganda. Mount Elgon is located 420 KM2 from Nairobi. It was Established in 1968 and found on the Kenya - Uganda border, Mount Elgon National Park is a beautiful area of unspoiled wet mountain forest and fantasy like afro - alphine moorlands. Access is via tarmac road to Kitale, branch to murram road then to the Chorlim Gate. The Ugandan part of the park covers 1110 KM² while the Kenyan part covers 169 KM².Mount Elgon National Park is home to over 300 species of birds, including the endangered Lammergeyer. Mt. Elgon is an extinct volcano that first erupted more than 24 million years ago. Mount Elgon is a popular destination for nature lovers providing an exclusive domain for backpackers with numerous birding trails. Its vast form, 80 KM in diameter, rises 3070M above the surrounding plains, providing welcome relief in more than one sense of the word. Mount Elgon National Park was gazetted in 1968 and covers a narrow transect on its north-eastern slopes. Mount Elgon is the largest and oldest volcanic mountain in East Africa. They found shelter where they could: in caves and under trees. The luckier ones stayed in a primary school or moved in with their relatives. In 2007, SGS Qualifor certified Mount Elgon National Park as "well managed" under the FSC system. Accreditation Services International found that SGS Qualifor's certification was based on hoped for future improvements, rather than what was actually happening in the National Park. ASI, however, failed to take any meaningful action against SGS Qualifier. The lovely mountain is shared by both Kenya and Uganda as it lies on the border. The mountain is vital to the social and economic functioning of the area, and is a water catchment supplying millions of people in Uganda and Kenya (van Heist, 1994).
