Mpanga-Kipengere Game Reserve
The Mpanga-Kipengere Game Reserve is a protected area in Njombe Region of the Southern Highlands of Tanzania which was gazetted in August 2002. Jointly funded by both organisations, the survey was completed over two 10-week fieldwork ‘phases’ during late 2002 and early 2003, one phase coinciding with the dry season and one with the wet. Several rivers are situated on the territory of this protected zone, which drain into Ruaha River and Rufiji River basins, as well as the Usangu wetlands. The reserve is the source of several rivers that feed into the Great Ruaha River and Usangu wetlands. A unique montane forest type in Tanzania covers most of the reserve: “Southern Rift Montane Woodlands”. Here more than 17 types of forests can be found, where a great amount of rare birds and butterflies are observed. There are about 28 species of mammals on the territory of the Mpanga-Kipengere Game Reserve. A comprehensive biodiversity inventory has been conducted within the Game Reserve.
